To strengthen the rule of law, police reforms are essential, as a priority area for further development. The police, as the most visible authority for maintaining public safety, is subject to changes that include the establishment and renewal of mechanisms for mutual cooperation and communication with citizens, which represent a key tool for strengthening trust in the police, which will achieve sustainable effectiveness in police work. The concept “police in the community”, i.e. “police close to the citizens”, represents a philosophy of approach to policing and an educational framework, above all, for police officers, in view of strengthening preventive policing. This will enable mutual cooperation and communication between the police and citizens.

The project “Towards a transparent, accountable and inclusive police force in the Republic of North Macedonia” is being implemented in order to contribute to better police work and increased trust in the police of the Republic of North Macedonia. This goal of the project is intended to be realized by assessing the degree of accountability, transparency and the level of inclusive decision-making in the work of the police at the national level. Furthermore, the ultimate goal of this year-long endeavor is to encourage dialogue between the police, the media and civil society organizations at the local level, with the hope that it will contribute to the public debate about greater security in Macedonian society.
